All good teachers know that making assignments, even formal assessments, relevant for students is key to an engaging classroom. And by relevant, I mean…..some sibilance of the outside world.
Last month, I had the privilege of teaching the Roaring 20s to an eighth grade class. It was super fun to talk about such a wild decade!
The goal was for students to illustrate their knowledge by filling out an Instagram Template.
Their instructions were to:
- draw a relevant image
- write a caption
- and use five hashtags for each.
The results were hilarious and educational. I would recommend it’s use for grade 6-12 as younger students may not have been exposed to Instagram (yet).
Additionally, hashtags are a great way to show understanding because you only use the key words associated with the posted picture.
Here is a free Instagram template you can use with any subject.
I would love to see how you use Instagram with your students of all subjects!

Thanks for sharing! I’m going to use this with my HS students. We’ve been discussing empathy and I will have them make a post with visual or quote. Great idea!

empathy is SO abstract but so important! Glad you found it useful, Kimberly!
